Our friend is gone...

It was about noon when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I thought it might have been another email from Hyundaiparts.com offering me another deal on the faded headlights I was looking to replace on my daughter's car. I was just thinking about the chicken curry and jasmine rice I had in the fridge when I saw a text message from William's wife, Sandra...

He passed away today at 2:45am.

I sat down at my desk in disbelief. I opened up Steam on my phone and began to text those who asked constantly about Lo Ping's condition. I knew this day was coming, you are just never really prepared for it. My friend was gone.

It was about five years ago, freshly divorced and broke, I found myself setting up my laptop at a friend's house that would become my place of residence for the next year as I tried to piece together my living arrangements, financial obligations and child custody requirements. I had always had an affinity for video games that has been passed on to my children. But one game stood out in particular: Half-Life.  I was staring at the four installation disks of Half-Life 2 that I had ironically received as a gift from my now Ex-wife in Christmas of 2005. I had played thought and won the game two or three times, but the real
fun was in the multiplayer mode. That feeling of sending that green filing cabinet into someone's cranium with the grav-gun speaks volumes of the games playability when you are out of conventional weapons.
After finally loading the game, I began looking at the multiplayer menus. It was 2012 and there were STILL people playing this game. I jumped from server to server, Loki's to Senior Slayers, Fozzy's to Anitalink's. There was one server where political discussions ruled the afternoons and killer music and comedy tracks ruled the nights... SoCal#1.
I kept coming back to SoCal because of how welcoming its host Lo Ping aka Obama's Mama was to all who entered and proclaimed....

"It's a great day to be alive and be on SoCal#1!"

William Adolph lived in Idyllwild, California. His love for gaming was only trumped by his love of his wife, Sandra. He enjoyed talking about the state of politics and theology. Well spoken, you could not help but listen to his stories that varied from World War I, to his love of writer's Gabriel Garcia Marquez's works, often reciting excerpts from Love in the Time of Cholera and 100 Years of Solitude.

He would sing Mexican folk songs over the server while sending familiar green tables flying in your direction. If you were new and spoke over the headsets, he would kindly ask you to remove certain bodily fluids out of your mouth to enable you to speak clearly.

For many of us, SoCal was a place to go and have fun and be greeted graciously by an old friend, even if you didn't know him personally. His warm demeanor and playful spirit made him seem younger that he actually was, but his wealth of knowledge made him seem much older and wiser.

William left me the keys to SoCal in December of 2017 so he could take care of a sarcoma (a type of tumor) in his intestines. After a lengthy operation, the doctors in San Diego were able to remove the 13 lb. tumor, but the surgery had left him weak and unable to walk, but thankfully alive. The road to recovery was going to be difficult. After much physical therapy and inevitable confinement to a wheelchair, William was back home again.

Speaking to William those days after he got home, he complained often about a headache that he could just not kick. Day in and day out with maddening pain in his head made it difficult to talk for long periods of time. Having reached his threshold, he went back to San Diego to get checked out.  After a few days of not hearing from him, I received a phone call where he shared the news that would alter his life from that moment on... Inoperable brain tumor.

Communicating with him would prove difficult from that point on. The combination of the drugs to control the pain and the degenerative nature of the tumor made understanding his words somewhat difficult. In one of our last conversations, he asked me to please keep the server alive. He expressed the joy it brought him and others and to keep it going. I intend to keep that promise.

William let go in the wee hours of the morning today, June 28th, 2018. He will not be forgotten. His presence will live on in SoCal even though he is no longer here. The hole he leaves behind in the HL2DM community is immense. You know, William hated the word "community", but it is exactly what he created.

Good-bye William aka Lo Ping aka Obama's Mama

Gone, but not forgotten.

I am lost for words. I played HL2 so, long ago then quit I came back about 3 yrs ago and SoCal became my favorite server. Because, LoPing was welcoming, quick-witted, and funny so, I kept coming back. He left a great legacy as far as I'm concern. You SIR will be missed & remembered. RIP and thank you for SoCal #1 and for being LoPing.

  6. When someone on his server threatened my life, LOL he worked this out and finally banned the guy. He was truly one of a kind, we spoke when I was in his server and once I banned him on ours for a day, after that we talked more often. LOL He did speak his mind. We live one day at a time and for now and some days to come this will be in my thoughts and prayers.

  9. Lo Ping will go down in Half-Life history. "One of the most honest and caring soles I've ever met" I think that hit a spot with me too Maddog. Will was so engaging and loved to talk more than play the game. He will be painfully missed. Watching his transformation from Obama to Trump was awesome! We all learned something from our teacher friend Will. He was a giver. See you on the flip-side buddy.

  10. Even though we knew you were ill we hoped for the best. And the best is what you gave us. Thanks for all your hard work on So-Cal 1.

You kept me laughing with your comical wit. I miss you very much already. You didn't know it then, but you helped me get through some dark times, just by letting me forget things for just a little while whenever I logged on to So-Cal 1.

Every time I log on in the future, I will think of you...We never met, but I call you a friend. That is the highest compliment I can pay you, and you deserve it.

    Vaya Con Dios, my Friend...

  11. Another sad moment... I always enjoyed the times when he would be on the server and amazingly I found that often my spirits were lifted by merely his presence and more so when he would talk, tease, or joke. Another soul will be sadly missed and an emptiness will be felt. May he rest in peace...

  15. He didn't really advertise it much, but William was a Vietnam Veteran. He served his country in a really mixed up time. He came home and got on with life and his work. That's what Heroes do...

He is a credit to his country for serving with Honor. And we are all better for having known him.

Sorry, Bill...I know you didn't like to talk about it, but It needed to be mentioned here...

  17. So sad to hear the news about Will's passing. Will was a great guy and so much fun to chat with. Will was one of a kind...a real heavy weight water buffalo, a last of the mohicans type. My rivalry with wimpy waffle started at SoCal#1 years ago. I'll never forget the last time Will came into the Loki's School Of Combat server to play. He made a hilarious comment about how nobody likes wimpy waffle because he's an arrogant douche bag. Damn that was so funny but so true. I laughed so hard..I'm laughing now just thinking about that. Godspeed Gayboy and be sure to wipe the cum off your chin before passing thru those pearly gates. Gone but not forgotten.

  24. Obama, I was sure you were a troll when I saw you hanging around on SoCal #1 for like a week straight ten years ago, and then you ended up running the server and making it into something that was very special, that it definitely would never have been without you. Your names were damn funny too. Miss you much. - Trompe-la-Mort

  26. Oh man. I just saw this today, and it breaks my heart. I found this server quite awhile ago... maybe 2008? After being offline for awhile going through a divorce, I signed back on several years later... and Will immediately recognized me with a big "Welcome back Pezzo!" I always enjoyed playing while he was on here, chatting about so many things. Ugh. I'm so sorry for his wife, and for the community of gamers out there who knew him so well. This is a punch in the gut. We will miss you, Will.

  27. I remember way back when... don't even know the date... I started playing half life 2 dm when it started. I sucked I was terrible. I remember playing on Socal#1 before LoPing ran it, I believe before he was even on the server. I remember him joining and going on and on about how great was Obama. I was in highschool at the time I believe. I didn't like Obama so we got into some political discussions together. I always thought he was hilarious and a great guy though we had our differences. I got better and better at the game and was probably among some of the best players but I didn't compete I just loved playing on Socal servers, I loved the socal community everyone had their thing to do on the server. I joined the army and still played in my free time, always loved seeing him he was the most memoriable person on socal. I eventually got banned from socal by Ragent not sure exactly, guess he thought I was cheating. I never did get unbanned but I loved Socal. It's the server I learned to play on and eventually got good on. I remember teaching all kinds of players on the socal servers also on how to prop jump, with a table, sink, toilet and so on. I remember doing so really crazy things. It's interesting to hear that he became a Trump supporter. I'm glad he did. Loping was a smart and hilarious guy and formed this community and kept it going. I just feel like I'm rambling now... I spent a lot of time on this game. Rest in Peace LoPing AKA Obamas Mama...
